Melanie Furtado is a sculptor from the coastal town of Victoria on Vancouver Island, surrounded by the raw nature of Canada’s West Coast.
The initial work always begins in the natural material of clay, allowing the form to be shaped intuitively by hand. Melanie prefers to work from direct observation, collaborating with the different individuals who pose for each sculpture.
After this initial creation period, the work then begins the transformation process into its final material. She favours elemental materials such as pâte du verre kiln-cast glass, lost wax bronze, plaster or kiln-fired terracotta.
Melanie works between Victoria, Canada and Paris, France.
